Labor Day Weekend,

It’s hard to believe the summer is winding down already, but the calendar has in fact turned to September.  While the weather still remains summerlike with the afternoon rain, the night time temperatures have started to dip below 80, and for the most part daytime temperatures are upper 80 to low 90.

At the nursery, we still have Longan for sale and the Jackfruit,  Carambola, and Guava are beginning to ripen.  Avocados are still in season and for the first time we grew Sweet Potatoes and harvested Dragon Fruit.  The Sweet Potatoes are very good, as we had them baked for lunch today.  Also, the Sapodilla ‘Tical’ has begun setting fruit.

Remember, tune into the garden show from 7-9AM Sunday mornings on 880 AM Miami, FL or streaming on the web at www.880thebiz.com

The dog days of summer are upon us. It is hot with very little relief from the rain. The rain has been almost nonexistent at the nursery. there has been rain in the area , however very little has fallen upon us.We are now in full production of Longans, they are sweet and delicious,  and we should have them for several weeks.Avocados are great, we have been eating them daily. Just a little salt and lime juice, makes  it wonderful. The Royal poinciana trees are almost finished with their bloom our pure yellow put on quite a show this year. I spotted a pink silk floss in bloom which was very attractive.Other than the heat and lack of rain there is very little which is new to report.I have been informed that the garden show will be returning to radio , as of this moment I do not have the details. I will keep you posted as soon as I have more information on the return of this radio information show. The lotus have been blooming off and on and they are spectacular. We have white and Pink. .The red sealing wax palms are starting to show color. the Rainbow eucalyptus has put on a tremendous display of color too.It won't be long before we start to prepare the ground for our Fall vegetable planting.

July 4th, is almost upon us.  Due to the colder than normal temperatures lasting well into the winter and early spring, the Lychee crop is not very abundant at the nursery this year, and much later than normal.  However, we still have some for sale, and they taste as good as ever.  On the other hand, the Longan crop is very abundant, and maybe another month until it is ripe.  We also continue to harvest Calabaza Squash and some Mamey fruit.  Coming soon will be Pomegranite and Pineapples.

This winter was especially rough on the Jade Vines. The freeze killed all of the potted Green Jade Vines (Strongylodon macrobotyrys), and all of the Red Jade Vines (Mucuna bennettii), both potted and in the ground.  We started propagating our Green Jade Vines from the plants in the ground, and we purchased the Red Jade Vine and have begun propagating this one as well.  We also recently planted a Black Jade Vine (Mucuna nigrican) and have some rooted cuttings of this as well.
