The Complete Vegetable & Herb Gardener -
Burpee has created a truly encyclopedic, but non-intimidating, guide to
organic vegetable gardening that can be used and appreciated by anyone,
whether or not they've ever stuck a seed in the ground. All the
essential information is here--how to condition the soil, how and where
to plant, sprouting schedules, what kind of yield to expect from each
plant variety, and harvesting tips--in beautiful, bountiful,
illustrated detail; the book's largest section, "Plant Portraits,"
contains explanations of the many cultivars of each vegetable and herb.
If you're a novice vegetable gardener or new to organic gardening and
can only afford one gardening guide, this may be your best value. |

Citrus Growing in Florida-This
concise, comprehensive guide combines the practical aspects of
day-to-day citrus production with its underlying horticultural
principles in a clear, easy-to-read style. Citrus Growing in Florida
makes citrus cultivation accessible to commercial growers, students,
and home gardeners. The book covers planting, production, grove
management, fertilization, spraying, and harvesting. For students of
horticulture, it discusses the history of the crop, its varieties,
propagation, and areas of production. For the homeowner, it provides
practical advice on growing everything from tart lemons and tangy limes
to sweet oranges and juicy grapefruit that define the flavor of
Florida. Changes in the Florida citrus industry since publication of
the third edition in 1990 make this revised work indispensable.
Expanded and updated, this edition addresses new regulations, invasions
from exotic insects and diseases, and increasing foreign competition.
The appendix provides detailed information on costs of citrus
production in various areas of the state. New chapters deal with global
production, methods of marketing and selling fruit, and the importance
of fruit quality for success in local and worldwide markets. |

Vegetable Gardening in Florida-Florida's
unique soils and climate present special problems for vegetable
gardeners. During my 36 years as state vegetable specialist, I have
learned how researchers and experienced gardeners have coped. Through
colorful illustrations and photos, I hope to share the wisdom of
academia inter-woven with the sage advice of such old-time gardeners as
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, renowned more for her portrayals of how early
Florida pioneers, called "Crackers", survived by saving their corn and
crops from yearling deer. Being of cracker heritage myself, I feel a
kindred spirit with this famous authoress who gave us The Yearling and
Cross Creek, and hope that my long tenure helping gardeners and
volunteering in her old garden plot combine now to give your garden
that extra boost for which it cries out as plainly as a yearling's
bleat. |

The Great Citrus Book-Summer
lemonade stands, oranges in Christmas stockings, lime margaritas and
breakfast grapefruits mean "citrus" to most people. This concentrated
reference and cookbook extends our knowledge of Genus Citrus' eight
major species (plus Genus Fortunella's kumquat) in great detail with
history, geography, climate (the key to how the fruit develops),
appearance, nutritional value and recipes. Lois Ellen Frank's clear
photographs of the 102 varieties are paired with descriptive
paragraphs. Cutlines give little-known facts like this one: The history
behind the name of the juicy Parson Brown sweet orange is a nod to the
man who discovered the variety - a Reverend Brown found the original
seedling in 1856. Chef Allen Susser's specialty is New World Cuisine
(American, Caribbean and Latin cooking) and it influences the 38 unique
recipes. His ability to transport recipes from the Old World into the
new cuisine is showcased with Shrimp Bigarrade, inspired by Escoffier's
Duck a la Orange; while Lobster Hash substitutes lobster for beef and
sweet potatoes for white potatoes. Portobello mushrooms stand in for
the fish in escabeche. No citrus cookbook is complete without original
recipes, and The Great Citrus Book again offers some new versions of
old favorites: Frozen Key Lime Pie, Blood Orange Marmalade and Lemon
Meringue Kisses with Lemon Curd. The Great Citrus Book is a sunny
addition to any cookbook shelf.-Independent Publisher |
