Tropical and Subtropical Trees : An Encyclopedia by Margaret Barwick, Anton van der Schans, Jan Barwick Claudy

This exhaustive, lavishly illustrated A--Z encyclopedic guide to tropical and subtropical trees is destined to become a much-treasured, hard-used garden classic. From the Inside Flap

Tropical Flowering Plants by Kirsten Albrecht Llamas- Tropical plant enthusiasts who enjoy cultivating unusual blooms and green thumbs seeking practical advice on how to care for rare specimens will embrace Llamas' up-to-date guide to a wealth of species that should flourish in USDA zone 9 or do equally well if nurtured indoors and brought outside in summer. Arranged according to botanical families, plant listings open up a wondrous world of evergreen shrubs, bulbous herbs, epiphytic vines, and clustering palm trees. Scientific names are linked to common ones for clarity, while descriptions contain insightful details regarding plant origins, habitats, and cultivation requirements. The straightforward yet engaging writing style, along with a profusion of telling photographs depicting leaf shapes, showy flowers, and tree forms, will help in identification as well as in selecting plants to grow, whether one gardens in a greenhouse, on a windowsill, or outdoors in a sun-drenched climate. Collecting contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists, the handsome and lavishly illustrated American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is a truly definitive gardening reference. With its 1,092 tiny-print pages, this may not be the book to tuck into your pocket as you weed and mulch, but what this encyclopedia lacks in portability, it certainly makes up for in scope. Hardy and tender plants, heirloom varieties and the latest hybrids--they're all accounted for here, with growing tips and background information about native habitats and ornamental features. You'll also find a fascinating section about botany, as well as information about basic gardening techniques such as mulching, staking, pruning, propagating, and protecting plants for winter. But the encyclopedia's main attraction is the individual plant entries--more than 15,000 of them, embellished with 6,000 full-color photographs and illustrations. From the visual glossary of leaves to the map of growing regions, The American Horticultural Society A-Z of Garden Plants provides an unsurpassed wealth of botanical information, making it the yardstick by which all other gardening references must be measured.

Now available once again with a new preface by the author, The Book of Bamboo introduces us to the oldest, most remarkable resource on the planet. Part catalog, part history, The Book of Bamboo shows us how this versatile wood, which is both sustainable and plentiful, has been used for thousands of years to make items ranging from things needed for survival like clothing and housing to more exotic and luxurious objects like phonograph needles and children's toys, as well as dozens of others. With information both practical and wistful, David Farrelly tells us about the plant's biology and life cycle, gives tips on harvesting and planting, and lore about the ancient wood. Farrelly conveys the rich and timeless message that bamboo -- strong, flexible, and beautiful in both its natural and its finished states is an abundant resource that could beneficially replace many of the less sustainable materials now commonly used in many aspects of our daily lives and transform our culture in the process.

Modern vandas are the most spectacular of all cultivated orchids, offering a kaleidoscopic range of colors and often blooming six times a year or more with flowers lasting up to eight weeks. This book presents for the first time a history of the introduction of Vanda species and an accurate modern scientific view of the genus, including exciting developments in hybridization. Drawing on 40 years of practical experience, the author offers a comprehensive horticultural treatment that includes the botany, breeding, care, and cultivation of vandas. All major diseases and pests and their control are discussed. Written for the advanced horticulturist, Vandas addresses not only the culture for temperate greenhouses, but also that for tropical and subtropical gardens and shade houses, the places where these orchids are most commonly grown.
The Art of South Florida Gardening: A unique Guide to Planning, Planting, and Making Your Subtropical Garden Grow

By Harold Songdahl, Coralee Leon, George Curtis

Review to come.

Your Florida Garden-Gardeners in the southeast have a totally different environment from the rest of the country and this book comprehensively addresses those issues. This book contains listings of both rare and common plants that are excellent for the southern and/or tropical garden. The book also deals with issues posed by gardening in the southeast. Many of the plants discussed are coming back in popularity as specialty annuals for the northern gardeners as well. Highly recommended for anyone living in or moving to Florida and the Deep South.
Woody Ornamentals for Deep South Gardens

"The definitive handbook and guide to garden trees and shrubs. Take it with you to the nursery." David Gibson, University of West Florida

Florida Gardening by the Sea is a primer for anyone new to gardening in this state's suprisingly hostile environment, especially near the coast, with it's sandy, alkaline soil, drought and downpours, salty well water, and occasional freezing weather. Starting with the basics of plant care and propagation, the book also covers what coastal gardners need to knpow about control techniques, specific plants, landscaping, and gardening activities month by month.
Common Coastal Plants in Florida-This book has complete desciptions of Florida's beach, dune, and wetland comunities and is a guide to selection and cultivation of plant species appropriate for each type to help gardeners assess the needs of their coastal properties. Plant characteristics, plant availability, planting and maintenance guidelines, and commercial sources for vegetation provide hands-on, how-to, information. Fourty color photographs and 35 drawings serve as a convenient, user-friendly identification guide.
Gardens by the Sea-Based on the hands-on experience of members of the Garden Club of Palm Beach, it includes chapters on palms, aroids, shrubs, dooryard fruit, flowering trees, herbs, orchids, roses, mangroves, and an essay on the history of the island of Palm Beach and its gardens and gardeners. Separate chapters deal with environmental issues and present new techniques to reduce water requirements. Special inserts on botany and cultivation, with simple sketches and explanations of practical terms, will enable uninitiated readers to become "horticulturally literate" at a glance.
Palms of South Florida - Beginners in palm study are often dismayed to discover that botanists do not separate the palms into categories by single characteristics but rather by a long list of criteria that are described in jargon. This is a book for those who are interested in palms ! but have not mastered the technical method or vocabulary of the botanists. Stevenson’s approach emphasizes apparent similarities that may be of more significance to the amateur. His hand-drawn illustrations highlight specific features of the overall plant or of particular components that serve to distinguish it from its relatives.

George B. Stevenson, a freelance writer, is the author or coauthor of several books, including Native Trees of the Bahamas and Native Trees of Everglades National Park.

The Tropical Look-This book just received the American Horticultural Society’s Garden Book of the Year Award. It’s filled with over 400 color photos of tropical and tropical-looking plants from both coasts -- Lotusland in Santa Barbara, the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek CA, the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Fairchild Tropical Garden in FL, David Fairchild’s home in Coral Gables (The Kampong), Texas gardens and various other locations around the country and the world.
The plants are easily found in alphabetical order, first by genus and then by species (with nearly 5,000 species, cultivars and hybrids listed) and the pronounciation of each has been mercifully included. The encyclopedia portion of the book also includes the plant’s family name, the plant’s common name, the growing zone, light and moisture requirements, special considerations of the plants and how to propagate. The author’s obvious love of these plants shows through in the lively descriptions, and when you’re reading about a new discovery you have Mr. Riffle sharing your passion for the plant and telling you what you need to know to ensure its survival.
